There has been much debate over Apple’s latest iteration of Final Cut Pro. Many die-hard pros are very upset at some of the features Apple has seemingly “removed” from the app.
I think if I were them, I’d probably be a little upset as well.
I, on the other hand, am a video editing amateur in every sense. The only “editing” I really do is cutting down our pastor’s message video from Sundays, which basically involves chopping off some excess and then fading it in and out. Previously I used iMovie, but Final Cut Pro has been a really nice upgrade for me.
I love the added control I get over exports, and have really enjoyed using Compressor to get some more options instead of iMovie’s limited export control.
The audio enhancement in FCPX also seems to be top notch, easily removing background noise, hum, etc…
For someone like me with limited experience and knowledge, these are all things that I like the software to just “do” and not let me choose how to do it. The only thing I need now is a few more cores in my processor and I’ll be set! 😉
How about you?
Are you a pro who’s upset with this new version, or an amateur coming from iMovie who loves it?
Eric J says
Premiere Pro CS5 for me i love the inegration between premiere, photoshop (for lower thirds), and aftereffects.
and IMO FCPX is a mix between iMovie and sony vegas.
Chase Livingston says
I haven’t ever used Sony Vegas, so I can’t speak to that similarity 🙂
Eric J says
Vegas has the handles on the edges of the audio and video to do fades. example:

Chase Livingston says
Gotcha, I definitely see the similarities.

This feature has also been in Soundtrack Pro for a while as well.

me, I am sticking with FCP 6, yes 6. Budget constraints. I do feel that FCPx will continue to improve and I will most likely switch to it within the year.
Yes, I feel that Apple has lowered their sights to hit a target between iMovie and where FCP7 should have been heading. This worries me, but I am kind of stuck and dependent on FCP – other options being out of budget.
Yet for the price that FCPx is at, it is certainly worth the investment to at least try.
Eric J says
What is your budget would $90 a month be affordable?
Phillip Gibb says
$90 a month? What would that be for.
renting or paying off of PrPro?
Eric J says
They have a subscription plan where if you sign a one year contract you can rent it for $90 a month and then use that towards a purchase. It actually equals out to the same price. Kindof like how maya and other pro tools operate on a subscription plan.

sound quite inciting, something I might consider for After Effects if http://lightworksbeta.com/ does not come out for OSX
Eric J says
I tried light works it was a really weird ui. And really buggy.

I have not yet got to play with the new FCPX. I have been a long time Final Cut Express user. iMovie since the last change was just too odd to work for me – I just could not stand the flow of it. I am sad they discontinued express for the new FCPX so eventually I will have to upgrade to it and see how it works.

Personally, I love it. It’ll definitely take some getting used to, but macprovideo has a full set of tutorials. I shoot and edit regularly, and I appreciate what Apple’s done to change it. I know a lot of people don’t 🙂 And Motion 5 is a steal of a deal….$50!? I snatched that up right away. Although, if you’re used to After Effects, it may be a tough change.
Drew Palko says
It’s all about After Effects for me! love it love it love it!!!… I use Premier for cutting down clips… and that’s basically it for now… I understand it’s suppose to be better for longer videos than After Effects, but I just haven’t figured out an effective workflow for that yet. I usually make clips in Premier, edit and everything else in AE, then sound in garage band (I know, I know -.- … but it’s the best I got…) Everything usually turns out pretty good 😛
