I love it when an artist with a long career finds a way to create songs that sound new, sound like what is current, without losing the qualities and characteristics that make the artist unique. I want an album that sounds like it was made in the year I’m living in, but I don’t want the artist to get lost in what’s current. I want to see them find themselves in what’s current.
Crowder does this exceptionally well. Every song on a Crowder album sounds like a Crowder song—Because of the banjo? Because of his voice?—and yet every Crowder album seems like a natural evolution of his sound. Or perhaps, it sounds like an infusion of his own style with all the qualities of contemporary music. Crowder continues not to reinvent himself but to expand himself and his artistry.
‘I Know a Ghost’ by Crowder
Before we move on to the “Favorite Tracks,” I just want to say how difficult it was to choose a list of favorite tracks for this album. The point of this list is to highlight some tracks. Highlighting a lot of tracks ceases to be a highlight. So, the list below should be seen as a highlighting of a few amazing tracks and in no way a slight to those not included.
Favorite Tracks
“Wildfire”
“Red Letters”
“No Rival”
“Happy Day”
To be honest, I wish I could share “No Rival” or “Happy Day” with you. I was driving home the other day, and these two songs were just awesome for my outlook at that moment. I think they will be for yours as well.
Crowder’s I Know a Ghost is…you know what? This sentence is hard to complete. It’s a Crowder album! What more do I need to say? Check it out!
