There are, however, more legitimate reasons to purchase aftermarket or secondary market domains. These are domain names that have been previously owned and become available for purchase once they expire or when the owner decides to sell it. With the new domain name extensions being released, I can see a big money making opportunity for domain registers as domain names are purchased by the masses — including those thinking they can make some extra money by reselling premium names. In the long term scope of it, I think there will be a backlash and fallout from all these purchases, as Internet users will become increasingly more comfortable with non-dot-com domain name extensions, making the value of having the perfect dot-com and other names less important — deflating the overall value of good domain names.
