I am a big fan of Yammer, which is basically your own interoffice Twitter. You could get the same effect with an inhouse StatusNet install if you wanted. Great for informal communications that you don’t want public, but email / chat aren’t well suited to.

We use Skype, Basecamp, and email. Nothing fancy. With the team growing as fast as it is (doubled in last 6 months and will double again in the next 6 months) and with the number of contractors we work with daily, we have to keep communication as generic and accessible as possible.

that’s interesting, I would’ve thought that communication would get more high tech as the team (&budget) grew. guess not.
