Have you ever wondered: How does Google search work?
Well, without giving away all their secrets, Google explains how Google search works in the video below, but I’ve also included an interesting infographic/flowchart of the process, too.
After looking at the process, you can better understand how difficult it is to be listed first or on the first page of Google’s search results, not to mention how important it is!
Take a look:

Not only is there a lot of data competing, but there’s a lot of data to be sorted and ranked! If it wasn’t for Google (and other search engines) can you imagine what it would be like to try and navigate the Internet?
This also shows us why it’s so important to have healthy SEO.
Thoughts?

Hi Eric, a really good post. A couple of points I would like to add if you would not mind.
The rel= “no follow” tag doesn’t necessarily mean that Google and other search providers will NOT follow the link, the bots can choose to ignore such tags, but for sure it will not pass Google pagerank. So if there are specific pages on your site that you want to discourage Google from following, or passing pagerank, then use the rel= “no follow” tag.
The more links you have from higher authority sites, the greater your own pages’ authority. May I add the importance of sourcing links from authoritative domains that occupy similar (if not the same) market space. So websites related to religion, are best sourcing links from other religion related content. Links from non-relevant domains are in most cases ignored by Google and will not help your rankings, so relevancy is extremely important.
Google+ now also plays a part in the search engine results pages (SERPs). While there is no hard evidence that having a Google+ page improves website rankings, it for sure will provide you another opportunity to expose your content. Google’s exact stand on it is as follows: “Think of your Google+ page as your brand hub. Your page, along with your profile image and recent posts, is eligible to show on the right-hand side of our results when relevant to a customer’s search. Relevant posts can also show up within search results for your page’s followers.”
My advice therefore is for any business or organisation that wants to be found via search to make sure you have a Google+ page and make sure it is linked to your website. Here’s the link for more info: http://www.google.com/+/business/
If I may, I have written an article that readers of this post may be interested in regarding SEO for beginners: http://www.davidvidgen.co.uk/seo-for-beginners-and-novices/ – it expands on the video you have provided by Matt Cutts on how to make your website visible and ranking as high as possible in Google.
