There are numerous ways to back up photos. You can use iCloud, DropBox, Box.com, Amazon Photo Cloud, Flickr, etc.
But what’s the best way?
While, I admit, my way is probably not the most efficient on time, it is the most efficient overall. Why? Because it’s unlimited and I’m already paying for it–I bet you are too!
I love Amazon Prime. Free two-day shipping
For now, this is my process:
- I take the majority of my pictures on my iPhone–the best camera is the one you have with you.
- When I connect my phone to my computer at work, which I do pretty frequently to charge it before an event or whatever, DropBox automagically uploads all the photos to the Camera Uploads folder.
- From there, I let it accumulate for a couple of months.
- After a couple of months, I drop all of them into Amazon Photo Cloud Storage.
Why would I do that? Because Amazon Photo Cloud Storage (mouthful) is unlimited for Prime users.

Google Photos automagically backs up all your photos without having to plug your device in. It simply uploads over wifi or even your cellular network if you so choose.
Better yet, free, unlimited backup is included with this service. You just sign up for a free Google account.
I much prefer this service for several reasons. While I pay for an Amazon Prime account right now, what happens to my photos in the future should I choose to stop buying Prime? Google photos also offers editing tools and other enhancements to your photos including automatically created animations, collages, movies and more. And of course it is available on iOS, Android and the the web.

APCS also allows you to upload raw files, as long as they are DNG it recognizes them otherwise YMMV.
