Back in the 90’s, we used to pay for our Internet service by the minute. No unlimited access (unless you had, you know, unlimited funds). Then, towards the end of the decade, that all changed with a flat free for unlimited access. Win!
Right?
It’s funny – web hosting has somewhat of the same history. You used to pay based on how much you used, but now you can get obscene amount of space and bandwidth for next-to-nothing.
But what if that’s overkill? Perhaps you need an alternative. Check it out…
NearlyFreeSpeech.net is a seriously simple and affordable web host that’s pricing is definitely a little against the norm (which is awesome, in my opinion).
“For as little as $0.25, you can setup web sites at NearlyFreeSPeech.NET, the original home of only pay for what you use hosting.”
Their platform offers PHP 5.2, MySQL, CGI support, and access via S/FTP and SSH (which is a total win for those of us that love the command line).
Though their domain registration isn’t as cheap as other services, it’d be interesting to see how the annual cost of a domain and hosting would stack up against whatever platform you’re currently running.
Anyone used these guys for major sites or web apps?

wow, that could be a great way for startup bloggers who want to find a cheap hosting service.
So long most tinkering is done offline.
I assume that the upload of you blog would be an initial spike in cost.

Depends! You could SSH into the machine, download, and setup your platform on the server-side without having to upload anything ;).
