It’s very easy to see in the world of business why graphic design is important when rolling out a product or service. A recent study by Etsy a website where individuals are able to sell products they create found that 90% of purchasing decisions were influenced by the product image. Another study showed that two-thirds of buying decisions by consumers are based on the design of the packaging of a product. But why is this and how does this impact churches and ministries?
Visual Content Explains Complex Concepts Better than Text
Moreover, studies have found that a human brain process images 60,000 times faster than it processes words. Graphic design can be a megaphone for the Truth that is being taught or conveyed. We live in a visually oriented society and though it is still important to be able to study and read the truth for yourself, graphic design can aid in the explanation of truth whether it’s a slide presentation or in a brochure form.
Graphic Design is Important because it creates “Convenience”.
A well-designed product will help a customer quickly recognize the products and services that they are needing and searching for. A clean and simple design can help quickly explain the benefits and solutions that a product or service brings. Though as a Church or a ministry we are not selling products and services as much, our product is the lives we touch and presenting the results of our ministries in a clean well-thought-out design can help people quickly understand the personal benefits they can gain from being a part of your church or getting help from your ministry.
Graphic Design is Important because it creates an “Emotional Bond”.
Consumers become emotionally attached to brands and the style and colors of that brand along with a logomark help solidify that emotional connection. Images speak to us on an emotional level. A logomark especially can become that bridge between the brand and the consumer’s emotions. Consider the logomark as a shortcut to quickly recall to a consumers brain their past experiences with that brand. Branding is all about the experience. What is the experience that you want to always present to your church members or potential church members? What do you want your ministry to be known for in the community? Then how can you solidify that experience that conversation, and relationship using design, logomark, or your website?
Graphic Design is Important because it draws Attention
People will spend more time looking at an effective and attractive design piece. Holding their attention with a well-thought-out design gives them longer to process what you are trying to communicate with them. Ministry is all about communicating the Gospel. If we cram text into a single piece of white paper with no margins, colors or graphics it won’t catch or hold people’s attention, and then you will have failed in your mission to communicate the Gospel. We need to catch and hold the attention of people long enough to convey to them the truths of the Bible.
Typography and color decisions play a role in all three of these important connections that you need to make with your audience. Clear and concise typography gives your audience the information while colors and visual cues solidify an excellent experience building the relationship between your church or ministry and the community around you.
