The tablet “wars” continue. Hot on the heels of the release of the Microsoft Surface, Google has released the Nexus 7 tablet that runs on the Google Android OS. The ‘7’ is an obvious reference to the size, which is 7″, naturally. A video and specs after the jump.

Clearly, Google wants some of the market share the Kindle Fire has occupied. While Microsoft is comfortable being on the high end of the spectrum with the Apple iPad and being priced at the higher end (these price points are just rumors) of the market, Google is pricing the Nexus 7 at $199 for the 8GB model and $249 for the 16GB model.
Some other specs:
- 1280 x 800 HD display with a pixel density of 216 pixels-per-inch
- Front-facing 1.2 megapixel camera
- Bluetooth
- Micro-USB port
- Powered by a quad-core Tegra 3 processor
- 1GB of internal RAM
- Battery life of up to 8 hours
The screen resolution is pretty impressive and isn’t far off from the iPad’s 264 pixels per inch resolution.
In my view, the 7″ tablets will find a place in the market largely because of the size. It makes for a better e-reader than the iPad (I purchased a Kindle largely because the iPad is just not good for reading books). Combine that with the features of a tablet and the lower price point, it will succeed.
Thoughts?

I think that this tablet is going to be a hit. It runs a stock version of Android and comes in at a killer price point. The form factor is going to separate it from Apple’s current offering. We have seen the Kindle Fire take off and I think that the Nexus 7 is going to begin to eat Amazon’s lunch. I dont think it will begin to take the iPad out of the spotlight quite yet. Google Play is in its infancy but seems to be coming together. I think that Google is on to something.

Yeah, it’s not the iPad, and Google Play is < Amazon, but I'm planning on swapping my first gen iPad for this. I find the iPad useless for email and calendar. I'm looking forward to Jelly Bean and the Nexus.

It’s hard to predict success at this time, though it’s definitely a Kindle-Fire killer.
But I guess it’s safe to assume the iPad market is untouched for now.
I am getting one for sure!!
