Google is an independent, private company.
They can do as they please.
But this latest Google doodle has caused a bit of an uproar today (Easter Sunday).
Although they are known for their various “doodles” on the Google search page, they haven’t had much of a track record with paying much homage to Easter.
But this?
Cesar Chavez Google Doodle
Today is the would be 86th birthday of Cesar Chavez.
He lives?
He lived.
Many have voiced their outrage via Twitter and other social networks, what say you?

I’m pretty sure God is God regardless of what cartoon Google puts up today. I’m more saddened by the stance of most of the commenters. It’s truly sad how far our country has strayed from our foundational beliefs and how ready we are to attack someone else’s faith.
It seems like its ok to exercise any faith except for Christianity.

True story.

As a Christian and a Pastor, I am not concerned over Google’s doodle after all Chavez was a christian who worked for the rights of the poor and the farm worker. He did so in Christ’s name and was obviously motivated by the resurrection power in the work he did. Christians would do better to point to that doodle and say, “See this is the kind of life that Christ’s resurrection power creates and motivates,” Than what christians have been saying.
However, I think there should be more righteous anger over Bing’s highlighting of only easter eggs as if that points to anything real about easter or even the constant posts about the March Madness Elite 8, where is the resurrection in that?
The more Christians get up in arms about these insignificant things, the less the world is going to take us seriously when we stand up and fight for the poor, the disenfranchised, the sick, the widow, and the orphan. Its not the google post that makes the church look irrelevant in the world, it is the church’s response that does.
Eric Dye says
Bing isn’t known for celebrating holidays and Easter is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, not good people who are doing good things.
I also agree with you.
We need to spend more time being a voice for the voiceless and less time raging against Google’s doodle choices.
Kevin Rutledge says
But there is a way to lift up what chavez did that is more than just good people doing good things.
” I am convinced that the truest act of courage, the strongest act of manliness is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally non-violent struggle for justice. To be a man is to suffer for others. God help us to be men!”
The resurrection is about Jesus, but also what Jesus is doing in the world now through His body. quote above points to the resurrection more than a bunch of people going and sitting in the pews smelling pretty flowers and singing hymns for an hour or two on Easter Sunday.
I just believe the outrage is false righteousness and that the church missed an opportunity here to point to the power of resurrection in the life of the Church today rather than simply pointing to the power of resurrection of Jesus on that day.
Eric Dye says
Amen.
