Left my full time job last year and have been self-employed since. Never been happier.

The graphic in the bottom left is not surprising as it represents three states with the largest populations. Another graphic that would be useful is if that data were normalized over something like population or # of registered businesses in the state.
Still, the rising trend is interesting. I wonder if older workers that have difficulty finding a new job are turning to consulting/freelancing as one solution, and that results in their relatively higher numbers.

Interesting question. Some deeper stats would certainly be nice.

I have a friend that just got a job after two years of unemployment. My last position was over in February and I’ve been freelancing since. I think it’s a much better choice to freelance than to look for the one job that fits your needs. If I have a client fire me, it affects my income, but I can get another fairly easily. If my friend has his one “client” fire him, he has to spend (potentially a long) time looking for another one.
In the past couple of months I’ve found 6 potential clients online and was able to start working for 4; it’s easier to get “hired” for a $1000 job than a $40,000 permanent position. I do feel like I’m close to a tipping point where things are only going to get better.

Leaving my corporate marketing job (after 20 years) was one of the best decisions I have ever made! It came with a lot of human fear but God-direction and blessing. The past two years have been the best of my career.

Left my full time job in January of this year. It’s been fun. It’s been a struggle at times. But things recently have gone very well and 2012 is going to kick butt. Never regretted that step of faith however. Best decision I ever made.

Sounds like a good post series … [nudge-nudge]

I’ve been a full-time freelance graphic designer since 2005, so I’m going on 7 years.
I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way.

I think everyone agrees, here, eh!

I’m a freelance videographer, author, speaker, and church tech consultant. I spent today editing a promo for a small Christian college. Tomorrow I’m finishing up the contract for a video system I’m putting in a local church and doing some web design work for one two states away. I love what I get to do, helping churches change lives and eternities.
