Despite the summer movie blockbusters and the future Marvel movie lineup, this is not the Golden Age of Comic Books. During the comic book boom, hundreds of new issues were released on a weekly basis. Many of these old comic books and comic book heros have now become Public Domain!
And I’ve found where you can read them—for free.
Comic Book Plus
There’s nothing fancy here, but I am pretty sure this site is responsible for having swallowed-up more time than I would care to admit. Seeing these old comics is pretty amazing. It’s like learning about toys that were never made because they never made it through development or hearing a story that was forgotten and never published or filmed. These are the heros that didn’t pass the test of time or the comic book companies that faded away. This is a curiously interesting time capsule of American culture.
Click around, check it out, read some funky comics on the Comic Book Plus website. And considering these are public domain, some of this art could be useful in design work.
