The most profound moments in my life seem to come from unexpected places. In a recent conversation with my 11-year-old daughter, she spoke to a core issue I believe is hardwired into us all — “What do you want to do with your life?” I’ve posed this question to her many different times, always receiving different answers. But today in my kitchen, she looked at me, tilted her head thoughtfully, and said, “I don’t know what I want to do, but I want it to be something big.” And there it is. That desire that sits in us all — the desire to leave a mark, the dream for adventure and the longing to matter. As is often the case, the wisest people in my house are usually under the age of 12.
This desire to make an impact is at the heart of the church planter, the disciple maker, and the leader of movements. If you want to make an impact, there are four essential ingredients you’ll need:
- A Vision – People who make an impact are uncomfortable with how things are today and a possess clear vision for a better alternative.
- A Plan – Rarely do people make a lasting impact by accident. The difference between a dreamer and a world changer is that one has a plan.
- The Data – The ability to know if you are making progress can prevent burnout. To answer the question of whether what you’re doing is helping move you in the direction of your vision, you need reliable data.
- Systems – Whether you’re leading a movement or planting a church, there are countless moving parts. You’re only likely to succeed if you have the systems to manage the pieces and enable others to help.
With the right ingredients, you can help your church stay on mission and leave a lasting impact for the Kingdom.
