I don’t know how many users actually stick with the default theme that ships with WordPress (nor do I blame them for switching), but TwentyTen – the default theme in WordPress 3 – shipped several things that set it ahead of many of the free themes available today.
The theme ships with…
- The HTML5 doctype
- Eric Meyer’s reset.css
- Commented closing tags
- Clean stylesheets
- ….and more

The biggest takeaway is this: if you’re entering into the WordPress Theme market – either free or premium – it’d be nice to include many of the basic utilities that the default theme ships :).
