I recently acquired an iPad2 (which I love) and as a photographer, I was very interested to see what I could do with it as portfolio for my work. Many art directors and editors are accepting iPad portfolio’s (in addition to print and online) to look for new talent. In addition, having a portfolio on hand when meeting with potential clients is pretty cool too.
Developers saw the potential of the iPad as a portfolio device and therefore there are quite a few apps available. There is always a risk with having to put up money for an app, so there’s always a lot of research to do beforehand.
After doing quite a bit of reading reviews and looking at prices, I went with Foliobook. At a cost of $9.99, the price was right and it allows enough customization without it getting tedious making changes.
The customization is what really led me to give Foliobook a try. When you first open the app, this is what it looks like:
However with just a few tweaks, I was able to change it:
The overall look and feel can be simple as I made it or you can be very dynamic using motion or texture backgrounds. Their Vimeo page has motion backgrounds as well as some instructional videos.
Going through the portfolios is nice and easy with just swiping to the left or right or with a double tap, a play button can be pressed to go through images automatically. A simple swipe down reveals a set of thumbnails and swiping back up hides the thumbnails.
It’s a very clean and simple app, but also very effective.
I highly recommend Foliobook.
Do you have any iPad portfolio apps you’d recommend?
