Facebook is the social media network that everyone is on (regardless if they are fully active or using it for more than just Farmville). There is currently a hot button issue with parents on if Facebook users under 13 should be allowed on the network. The infographic below has some great insight into the discussion, including the responsibilities of parents and their seemingly double-mindedness.
- There may be over 7.5 million kids on Facebook under the age of 13 and should not be.
- 74% of parents are concerned about their child’s safety, even though they allow their under 13 year old on.
- There is reason to be concerned because 55% of teens have given out personal information to someone they don’t know online.

Just a few days ago, my wife and I finally agreed to let our 12-year-old daughter open a Facebook account, although we tightly monitor it and are only allowing her to friend family members and a few others for now. She’s had a Google+ account for about 9 months, which I also monitor VERY closely. Because she’s been very responsible on Google+, we felt OK with letting her on Facebook. She’s also had a Pinterest account for a while and has been responsible with that.
Personally, I’m really hesitant to let my preteen kids have social media accounts for a number of reasons, but it’s hard to say no because it’s so common. I work with 4th and 5th graders at church and easily half of them already have smartphones and Instagram and Facebook accounts.
