For those of us who work with teenagers, either as youth workers, teachers, or parents, we know that texting while driving is a big deal. Unfortunately, many teens either believe that it will never happen to them (they are untouchable) or think that it is all blown out of proportion.
Coming from someone who has worked with two families in the last two years where the student was distracted while driving and either the teen or the other driver was killed, it is a HUGE deal. Nothing could be more disastrous. No one wants to see a student’s life come to a sudden stop like that.
Below is an infographic, but here are some of the highlights:
- 23% (1.3 million) of accidents involved cell phones
- In the 5 seconds you read a text at 55mph, you travel the length of a football field.
- Adults are just as guilty and they are the role models. 48% of teens have seen parents driving while taking on the phone and 15% saw them texting
