We have officially taken the plunge of removing the TV cable from our house and solely relying on Hulu Plus. We took the Comcast DVR back to the store and ended our cable services. (though we kept the Internet) This a big step for Ashley and myself as neither of us has been without cable our whole lives and so it will be an adjustment for us, but we are excited for the future.
There were a couple of reasons behind the change. First off, the cost of cable through Comcast is $80/month, completely unacceptable. We could be putting that money towards our student loans, date nights, or other more productive and life giving events and things. At the same time, they had outages a couple times a month for several hours at a time, we were not even getting the services we were paying for. Finally, we won’t have the time for TV like we did before with this baby coming. We won’t even have time for television in a few weeks, why pay for it?
There are a lot of options out there to replace cable: Apple TV, Hulu Plus, Netflix, iTunes, and other players. Because the initial issue was cost, iTunes and Apple TV were out, leaving NetFlix and Hulu Plus. While NetFlix seems to be getting into the playing field of TV, we did not think there were enough options out there and they lost over a 1,000 movies when Starz did not renew their contract. At the same time, Hulu Plus coupled with RedBox DVDs is a perfect solution for us.
In the end, we are now saving $72/month, gaining more time in our house, and hopefully going to leave this vice behind us! When football season comes around, I am sure I will be finding people to go visit, which is great because we will get to socialize and enjoy their company. In the end, we really won’t be missing it.
Have you thought about leaving cable? What other solutions have you heard about to replace cable?

We don’t have a TV, mainly because of the expense of buying a tv and cable. We just use netflix and stream other online shows. We have a moment or two sometimes where we are bored and just wanna veg out in front of the TV, but we are much more productive overall. You’ll find you’ve made a great choice!!! 🙂

I personally cannot believe how much it costs! It is kind of ridiculous! We don’t need it any ways.

Thanks for the post! I’m thinking of doing the same thing. I def agree with you on several advantages of moving away from Comcast. It’s the live TV events (football, American Idol) and the missing gaps that are making me second guess the switch. I already have Netflix and love it for movies, I just need access to my TV shows. However, if Hulu Plus can increase it’s coverage of shows, I think I’ll be switching.

Agreed on the live events issues, though that is why we have friends and football parties, right? 🙂
