I am a huge fan of data. Beautiful things can be arranged to tell a story. But data for the sake of data is missing the point. Data needs to communicate something, it cannot be unbiased from the person reading and structuring the data.
The video below features Giorgia Lupi, an Italian information designer, and researcher, who talks about how numbers, graphs, and charts can tell the story of a person and make something as mundane as looking at a clock a work of art.
- Instead of using data to become more efficient, let’s use data to become more humane.”
- “Data is treated like a god, an infallible truth.”
- “We have to find ourselves in the data… Data alone will never give us the solution.”
What are your thoughts on data and how do you attempt to use it well for yourself and others?
