[“Church Without…” is a series of think-pieces designed to slowly deconstruct what we think is essential to having church and to call attention to the hidden barriers we’ve erected between ourselves and the Great Commission.]
I’ve written about limitations and obstacles, so what more could I say using the word “problems”? That’s a good question. Let me answer by offering up something you probably didn’t expect.
One of the biggest problems that plague churches and church leadership teams is the discontent bred through our digital deluxe of church inversion. What I mean by that is that we are putting out a lot more about what happens in the church. As my church shares the cool things that we get to do, other pastors and church leadership teams see this.
And discontent develops.
They become discontented with their church, their pastor, their calling.
My church put on a huge fireworks/concert/fair for our town. This year, we’re moving to other things, shifting our focus to work with foster care kids. I’m sure that there were some churches who watched my church put on this massive event for 10,000 people, and rather than feel good about what was being done for the kingdom, they felt a little bit let down.
“Why can’t we do that? Whey didn’t we think of it first?”
My point here is this: There is no church without problems.
Don’t give in to the digital discontent of our social media-driven age. Every church has problems, and every church has a place in the larger purpose of God’s Church.
Don’t be discontented with what you have because of what you read on Facebook, but rather, be discontent with who you are as God gives you a vision for who you will become. Don’t settle for who you are or what your church is, but don’t be unsettled by someone else and their church. Celebrate with them, and one day, they’ll be celebrating with you.
