Did you know that are only 19 weeks left until Easter? Now if you’re thinking that’s crazy talk because we haven’t even celebrated Christmas yet, you would be correct. However, like a lot of people on a church staff, I’m wired to think about what’s next.
To me that’s what’s so fascinating about Christmas. The world always tries to keep you and I on a rapid pace moving from one thing to the next. But that’s not what Christmas demands from us. Christmas demands that we stop and reflect.
Stop and reflect.
We stop and reflect on the child that was born. We stop and reflect on what he will do one day on the cross. We stop and reflect about our own lives in the context of Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection.
Now personally, I have no problem with the stopping part. I can practically stop doing anything. But reflecting? That’s something quite different. Reflecting requires me to own mistakes I’ve made or others have made towards me. Reflecting requires me to acknowledge my inabilities and insufficiencies that can only fulfilled by the baby who lies in the manger.
Last Christmas reflecting was hard for me. It was my first without my Dad. So many of my Christmas traditions seemed incomplete. However, this Christmas reflecting reminds me that my second son is on his way and soon there will more life in our home.
Stop and reflect.
I don’t know what you need to do to stop and reflect. It may mean leaving social media for a while, or reading Luke 2 when things seem to get a bit hectic. Do what works for best for you.
The world will try to remind you of what’s next. That you should worry about the next thing on your calendar or to-do list and that’s why so many of need Christmas. So we can be reminded to stop and reflect.
