I know this isn’t an amazing pro tip or anything, but it’s certainly a fun thing to do.
Here’s how to change your WordPress greeting from, “Howdy,” to anything you like:
[cc lang=”php”]add_filter(‘gettext’, ‘change_howdy’, 10, 3);
function change_howdy($translated, $text, $domain) {
if (!is_admin() || ‘default’ != $domain)
return $translated;
if (false !== strpos($translated, ‘Howdy’))
return str_replace(‘Howdy’, ‘Welcome’, $translated);
return $translated;
}[/cc]
Just drop this snippet into your functions.php file and add the greeting of your choice:
- Welcome
- Ciao
- Greetings, Your Highness
- Ready for your bidding, Lord
- ‘Sup
What other greetings can you think of?

Neat little tip Eric – thanks.
Oh and ciao isn’t traditionally a greeting it’s a farewell – though originally the Italians did use it as both the hi part has faded away – that said the Maltese use “ciao ciao” to mean “hello can’t stop bye”.
I’ll get me coat now.

Really? Where do you get your info on the Italian use of ciao?
