Captain Marvel is the latest in the Marvel Cinematic University series as we head into Avengers: Endgame. It should be noted up front this is not a full review as I feel there are several needed comments that will spoil this article and we are going to keep the spoil-free expectations.
This is the perfect setup for Avengers: Endgame. I foresee this not being the best Marvel movie this year, but it might not be the worst either. I hear story after story of fathers taking their daughters to the movie, inspired and proud to be a nerd when their child decides they want to be Captain Marvel. Of course, this comes well after Wonder Woman, so it might very well late in the game with that.
Where Does This Rank In The MCU?
Up front, this is not my favorite Avengers movie. From a pure superhero movie standpoint, it is fun with lots of sci-fi, but lots and lots of character development. Avengers: Infinity War take that.
For those who are Marvel purists, this is sort of true, sort of not because they take from several components of the different tellings of Marvel, but also the need to fit it within the overall MCU narrative. So it’s not the best of any world, many other MCU videos take that.
For the standpoint of cultural impact, we have the first Marvel movie that has a female lead. They do this well, but Black Panther is by far more effective with this approach.
I was disappointed in 98% of this movie is a stand-alone movie. The first end credit was crazy good but did not make up for this. I could have used more and they had several ways they could have done this with Captain America. I’ll give this movie a 4 out of 5.
