Another country in the world is on the verge of a smartphone boom.
Canada is expected to have a 2.7 million mobile subscriber increase before the end of 2012, increasing the countries total to 28 million (Canada’s total population is about 34 million).
There are two major factors at play.
First, the government has loosened its grip on which companies are allowed into the wireless game. The newest player, Wind Mobile, offer things like unlimited data plans. Offering an unlimited data plan is viewed as “price gouging” compared to the previous scenario.
The second factor is that the government has tightened it squeeze on internet bandwidth use. Starting March 1st, the Canadian Radio-Telecommunications Commission will impliment ‘Usage-Based Billing’ in Canada. Metered internet usage. This is leading the market away from personal computers and towards tablets and smartphones.
Maybe it’s just a coincident, but it’s almost as if the Canadian government is trying to manipulate the market.
