Dietrich Bonhoeffer has been (and still is) one of my most favorite theologians to read of all time. My father first introduced me to him and I’ve read every single book that he’s published.
Except this one: Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy.
Someone passed me this video of a trailer that was created and I’m hooked. Purchased and waiting for its arrival!

I read it a couple weeks ago. It was good. I am also am intrigued by Bonhoeffer. The book had lots of context and details that I didn’t know. It will be too detailed for many, over 500 pages. But I still wanted to know more about what made him tick. In many ways it is surprising that so much primary source material exists, tons of letters and notes.

I have to say, after thinking about the book for a while and reading some reviews from others that have more background that I do. I am not as excited about it now as I was. I have on my docket to read the original bio from his friend Bethge (and the follow up one by Bethge in 2000). And there is another bio from Ferdinand Schlingensiepen, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 1906-1945 : martyr, thinker, man of resistance (T & T Clark, 2010). ISBN 978-0567034007 that is out too.
I have since picked up the new translation of Discipleship and am going to pick up the new translation of Life Together and Ethics.
I do feel like Metaxas has a perspective and played it. (Which we all do, but I am not sure get got it all right.)
