For a few of you yesterday was a doozy. Catalyst One Day blew my mind and then Off The Blogs event was perhaps the best event and night of worship that I may have ever had.
So, I’m exhausted.
And there’s tons more work to be done this morning and today.
One of the consistent things I shared with others yesterday at Catalyst was small ‘nuggets’ of wisdom in regards to how and what to blog.
Here are 10 easily-digestible pieces of advice that I shared yesterday:
1. Aim to be “helpful” through your blog. If you blog for self-promotion or simply “selling” something you may gather an “audience” but not any relationships.
2. Brevity is pretty nice. People have other things to do than to read your blogs. There are times where “long” entries are valuable and necessary but especially when you’re starting out don’t blast people.
It’s like when you meet someone at a conference for the first time *ahem*… you don’t jump into a long drawn-out display of your wisdom and knowledge and talk someone’s ear off, right?
3. Share with others stuff that’s valuable. Do it often. Like… every post if you can.
4. People like stories. We’re connected to a Great Narrative. Jump on in!
5. Blogging is networking. But if the network stops with you you’ve just cramped the medium’s style. Help others connect with each other.
6. Blogging is blogging. It’s not writing a book or a thesis. It’s blogging. So hit the publish button please.
7. Consistency is extremely important. It’s like building a relationship. You meet and connect often enough to begin really building that relationship. If you only talk once a month, that’s not really a “strong” relationship, is it? Same thing with blogging once a month… that’s not building a relationship.
8. Don’t be a jerk or a mean person… or try hard not to be one.
9. Thoughtfulness goes a long way. I’m not sure exactly how you, individually, can “be” thoughtful, but I think you can figure that one out.
10. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Is it there? Should it be?

I like the idea of idea nuggets. You almost have to swallow them whole, they are almost too small to nibble at.
human3rror says

I like what Andy Crouch said about #7 at CCO Jubilee two weeks ago: If you have not updated your blog in the last 30 days, you do not have a blog.
human3rror says
dude, best suggestion ever. i love it.

I'm really in tune with #4 – Tell stories. I typically opt for fewer posts and more time between posts on my blog so that I can craft stories.

I first got connected to the blog world through Seth Godin’s blog. Short and helpful nuggets really drew me in. I try to strike a balance between longer analysis of book reviews and leadership principles, and brief nuggets. So somewhere in between.

I had a blog I used to update. But that was before I got sucked into the collective known as FaceBook. Now, I micro-blog on FB and ignore my old blog. And I feel guilty that I'm leaving behind people.. Why haven't I updated my blog? Time. I took time to write what I thought were meaningful entries. Now I throw < 140 chars up on FB and be done with it. Do I need FB recovery? Step 1 – I'm powerless over FB and my online life has become unmanageable.
