Here on ChurchMag, we have already told you about ChurchMem.es, here, here, and here, and a bunch of other times too. But as I have joined the ChurchMem.es team, I would like to brag about it a little bit too. 😉
I don’t know about you but I think that Jesus laughed when He was down here. I mean, we live in such a funny world — don’t we?
We humans, have taken ourselves seriously since forever. We have the choice to laugh or cry and how many times do we choose to cry?
Christians, in particular, have gotten the reputation for being straight-laced, uptight, and serious. If anyone needs to laugh, it’s those of us who claim to have heard The Good News, right?
Brennan Manning says it well in his book Lion and Lamb: The Relentless Tenderness Of Jesus:
[…] But blessed are you only if you can laugh at yourselves, if you don’t take yourselves too seriously, if human living doesn’t revolve around you and your needs.
Memes are great for just that; laughing firstly at ourselves, helping us to not take ourselves too seriously, and reminding us that human living doesn’t revolve around us and our needs.
They can be used for teasing, a tool for telling the truth in kidding, pointing out all the funny things about pop culture and life in general, questioning why we keep on doing the things we do, or for saying all the things everyone has wanted to say but hasn’t.
The truth is that the Christian and Church culture is no different than any other culture. There is and should be room for all of that; from teasing each other, laughing at ourselves, telling the truth in kidding, to pointing out funny things about Church culture and Christian life, questioning why in the world we do some things just because we have always done them that way, and of course, saying all those little things every one of us has wanted to say but hasn’t.
ChurchMem.es is just for this. It’s a place full of memes which help us to not take ourselves too seriously, remind us that life doesn’t revolve around us, and at times even make us stop and think.
Not only can you enjoy the memes there, by subscribing to get one in your email every day, but you can even contribute by submitting your own memes or meme ideas (anonymously or with credit) about Church, Christian culture, theology or just clean, funny things.
We need to laugh; at ourselves, at life, and at this funny world. And I like to think Jesus is laughing with us.
