If you’ve never heard of Big Fish, you probably have no idea what this book is about. Big Fish Presentations is a well-known company that helps clients create stunning presentations—both in delivery and in content and design. This book contains their ‘secrets’ to creating memorable presentations that connect well with your audience.
So let me come right out and say it:
This book is one of the best, if not the best book on presentations I have read.
And believe me, I’ve read quite a few. The difference with other books is the focus on more than content and delivery. A big part of the book is devoted to style and design, for instance of Power Point slides and similar tools.
The Big Fish Experience
For an absolute newbie, the info in this book may be too concise at times, especially the chapters on content and delivery. But for those who want to improve their presentation skills, there’s a ton of great and practical tips and advice.
The key message is this: keep it simple. This is what Big Fish preaches, in content, in design, and in everything else. Find your big idea and communicate it in the simplest way possible. That’s especially true for your Power Point presentations (or Keynote, or something similar) by the way, where people tend to go overboard in amount of text, styling, or special effects.
The book practices what it preaches; even though it’s a book and not a presentation, the design is attractive and reinforces the content. There’s a ton of pictures and illustrations, even graphs. It’s a fast and visual read that will truly inspire you with examples and stories.
I totally recommend this book to anyone looking to improve on their skills in presenting. My safe bet is that a lot of churches and Christian organizations could learn a thing or two (putting it mildly here…) from the Big Fish Experience. This is how they got started as well, out of sheer frustration with the bad presentations they had to sit through themselves. Yup, been there…
What’s your ‘weakness’ when it comes to giving presentations?
In what area would you like to improve most?
(I received this book free of charge from the publisher in return for an honest review.)
