Church media can be a powerful resource. I say, “can be”, because it is often undermined. It’s often reduced to filming the church live stream, editing talking heads, photos of people at church or in worship. I’m not suggesting that they never exercise creativity, I’m saying it is often subdued. We can and must create more engaging content that communicates God’s love for people in more engaging ways. Here are two practical, albeit obvious ways you can be a better creative.
Upskill
Church life and production, by default prefers predictability, it is easy to not upskill. You might already know what I am talking about. Once we’ve figured out how to do that predictable thing that becomes what’s expected of us, we settle.
New skills can help us get better at doing something. They can also help us do better things.
My suggestion that we upskill may be eyeroll-worthy but it is a critical and underrated one. If you lead any team in church, think about how you can not only hone your teams’ skills but also give them new ones.
You might be feeling stuck, but you can be a better creative. Consider enrolling for formal courses, or spending time learning from the YouTube. Either way, there are many ways you could upskill. Don’t get stagnant.
Experiment
Innovation and creativity are often touted as values of churches and or church creatives. But these values are rarely lived out. And, when they are, its often in limited terms.
I get it, sometimes the demands of church life get in the way. This is particularly true when teams and resources are scarce or limited. The challenge remains: there is no way you can get better without upskilling, and then experimenting.
Experimenting is both an event and a posture. The most engaging creatives are always thinking about a better way of creating. How do we communicate God’s truth in a better and more accessible? Is there a better approach? What else could we tweak and do better?
While this video is selling the iPhone 13 Pro, it communicates an attitude of experimentation that could help us get better. So, we can engage our audiences in a more impactful way. We must keep trying new things. We should always be thinking about how we can communicate and engage better.
Outro
Does your diary or calendar have space for upskilling and experimentation? Is there a clear, tangible action plan, and how often is it acted on? You can be a better creative.
