Wearable Technology in the Church: Why Not?

You forgot your Bible again? How? You got the hoodie Bible for Christmas!

How does Danny always forget the sheet music? After all, the choir committee did spring for that new music hat.

Pastor Joe had NO excuse to run over on Sundays any more. His Bible is on his watch now!

I’m telling you folks: the wearable technology revolution is upon us.

I don’t think we really need to worry about scripture-enabled frocks and robes just yet. I mean, church creatives are still getting church folks on Twitter, and people of all ages are still blown away by the Bible App on my phone. We clearly still have plenty of work to do. But if CES is any indication, the avalanche is coming, and it might be time for church techies to get the snowboards out.

The Joy of Regifting Technology

It was a great Christmas in this household. Not only did the kids get to spend time with one set of grandparents, they technically got two Christmases. While the myth of Santa Claus is probably all but ruined, I think these ruffians don’t mind if it always means an extra set of presents.

My wife and I prayerfully considered (no, really) what to get the kids. We leaned towards clothes and gadgets, but with the fluid nature of tech, getting newfangled pieces is almost never on the radar, as chasing the latest and greatest gadgets is a losing and very expensive battle. I’m familiar with Android and know that you can extend these devices by rooting, and tend to have an eye for decent hardware; and as the kids are already immersed in the ecosystem, it made sense to build on that by regifting technology this year.

Making Technology Life Resolutions

The first month of the year is almost over. The time is perfect.

New Year Resolutions are so last year. They’re almost always inspired by peer pressure and made in moments of regrettable levity, and they usually end up having a shelf life of a fortnight. Yes, there are some people who see resolutions through, and on behalf of the rest of us “normal” folks, I say, “Good for you.”

But I feel like starting something new and resolute, something like a time capsule, perhaps we could call it a  life resolution. Instead of trying to do something different ever year, how about making a set of goals that will make this world a better place for the long haul? This pretty much means making ourselves better people to reflect God’s love to more people and become better stewards of the talents we have been blessed with. I would like to focus mine life resolutions on technology as that’s where my personal passions are.

Connections without Condemnation

I had the opportunity to meet some long time Twitter friends in person a while back.

It was a fun time; everything went well. I discovered I had a big hole in my life from never visiting a Hastings store before that day. This place is fantastic. It is a geek’s dream. How cool is this place? I discovered I left my lights on before we went into the place, and by the time we left, the car battery had recharged itself. This, dear friends, underscores the awesomeness of Hastings.

Much Ado About Windows Phone

In the good ol’ days, handheld technology wars were much simpler. For PDA platforms, you had Palm and Windows Mobile. You generally picked one, made fun of the other camp, and life was good.

Then, Palm started making WM-powered devices, and it nas not been the same since.

Thankfully, the consumer space is filled with some great options. BlackBerry might be struggling, but is very much alive; iOS is thriving and Android is propagating in huge numbers. Palm morphed into WebOS and was put out to pasture.

Tales of Mobile Calamity: HTC Customer Service [Part 2]

A short while ago, I had the pleasure of whining about my jacked up phone. As far as I was able to tell, it was a hardware failure completely independent of my usage. I love my Android devices, and generally appreciate HTC‘s workmanship (up to this device), and I tend to stick with what works until something completely blows my current setup away.

My initial call to HTC customer service about my HTC EVO 4G LTE left me less than pleased. The device was out of warranty, and there was a significant cost (to me, at least) to repair. Not cool in my estimation, as I noted before, I literally treat my devices like gold. I felt that a year and a half is an insufficient time for a device to fail.
