Being an authority at something means that you are the go-to person about that subject. Everyone loves to use the term expert, but what does it really mean to be one? Is it enough to simply know a lot about the subject? Can you become an expert at something in just a few months? And do you have to have the approval of others to earn the label? We answer this and more in this week’s video blog.
The reality is that those on the Internet have cheapened the understanding of what a social media expert is. They think that having a bunch of followers or knowing some facts makes them an expert at something, but really all they have is some knowledge and are missing out on the wisdom that allows for the label of an authority. Here are three qualifications that need to be present to be an expert at something.
Three Qualifications For Being An Authority
- Have the Experience
Many statisticians have come up with periods of time that must be invested in to be an expert. You would never say that a high school football player is ready for the NFL, no matter what extreme talent they have. You need to develop physically, mentally, and fundamentally before you can compete at that level. The same is for any authority within any career choice. As great as it is to know how to do something, you need to also know how not to do it, what it feels like when you fail, and why all of these tactics are necessary. None of those three can happen without time and experience that turns your knowledge of a subject or hobby and makes it wisdom. - Have the Passion
As important as it is to have the experience of something, it is my belief that you need to have the passion of continuing to press into your brand, become a pioneer for your industry or ministry, engage with a desire to see reform, and think outside of the box with a creativity that is awe-inspiring. Without this fervent passion, you something cannot become an authority in your area of expertise. You may be an expert in the subject and develop a great brand, but you will still be a follower of other people’s practices. - Quality vs. Quantity
This term is so clique and yet the fact remains that to be an authority does not mean that you talk and talk until you have said everything you needed to and then continuously repeat it. This may put you in the realm of knowing a lot of stuff, but without a product or results, all it is is knowledge. At the same time, shooting for quality does not mean that you will be spending less time on your craft or industry. In fact, you may very well be spending more time on less outputs. Yet, you will be building an authority of greatness that can speak volumes to your brand and that is what separates someone that is smart from someone with authority.

In our eyes, this means putting our efforts into the necessary channels, creating content that is amazing, and not necessarily needing to post something every day. You will see a shift in how we post, but it hopefully will be for the better. We want to make something amazing and it starts with the unique content we create.
