Do you struggle to start a new habit? Many people want to start something new at the beginning of the new year, but even with great apps to help, most fail. In his book, Atomic Habits, James Clear lays out why you should focus on your habits and how to start a new habit.
The Atomic Habits Theory
James lays out a case for habits being key for personal development. He states that they lead to slow but steady growth, which can be remarkable in the long run thanks to compound interest.
More interestingly, he states that we usually try to change the wrong thing. We try to change the habit, but we should start with our identity.
He makes a good case, and I could also identify factors that work in the church and Christian communities. I have no problem accepting that God uses these natural to change people, as well as the unseen, and supernatural.
Have You Read Other Habit Books Before? This Is Still For You.
I’ve read a few other habit books and similar related ideas but this book really resonated with me. James writes in a fairly regular pattern with an example story, details of the topic and a roundup. There are four main sections related to the four aspects of a habit.
This layout works well for explaining the points and providing a detailed breakdown of the tips.
I’ll add that I don’t believe it falls into the typical sin of business and productivity books, that is, turning a blog post into a book with useless waffle.
Who should check out Atomic Habits?
If there’s a habit you’ve wanted to start, but just couldn’t. You should check out this book. If you’re into personal development, you should check out this book.
If you don’t like that kind of business / productivity book, then you shouldn’t check out this book.
