Are You Upgrading Your iPhone?

Are You Upgrading Your iPhone?

May 27, 2011
by Matthew Snider

The iPhone 4S or 5m, or whatever Steve decides to call it, is coming out soon. “Soon” may be in the next couple of weeks, months or even by Christmas. Will you be upgrading?

Come on community, sound off on what you plan on doing! I am currently at a 3GS awaiting an upgrade in November, with rumors breathing down my neck that iOS5 won’t work on my phone.

Will I be missing out on all of the iOS5 goodness?

So the question honestly is this:

iPhone 4s or wait till the world phone that comes with LTE etc?

I honestly don’t know what I want to do in terms of waiting, but I know that my A.D.D. will kick in on that date in November, if not sooner, to upgrade to a much faster iPhone.

So what say you community? What are you going to do?

Enjoy some more ChurchMag:

Dunno, I’m really happy with my iPhone 4. Not sure how I’d improve it, really (not that I couldn’t think of something). More interaction with other devices/apps maybe (say, acting as a control screen for a DSLR, or a VJ tool).

Heard rumors of a curved screen – crazy. I’ll let you on the bleeding edge try it.

Yeah I am torn due to having the 3GS, I used to have the 4 and really loved it. The 4 is just fabulous. I assume I will bleed all over the edge.

    I, too, am on 3gs.

Worse still, I’m on an aging PowerBook G4 that can only run Tiger. (You see where I’m going with this?) I’m still suck at iOS 4.1 because you need iTunes 10 to get past that. Well, you need at least Snow Leopard to get to iTunes 10 . . . ad nauseum.

So 2011 is my upgrade year: first for a new Mac Mini and then, more than likely, iPhone 4. A friend of mine said that most likely ATT will be dinging us if you want LTE so I might wait until that all settles down. The iPhone 4 should be enough.

Very interesting brother. I am sure 2011 will be a great year for ya. My new Macbook Pro rocks my world everytime I open it!

We can celebrate together on our upgrade dates!

I’m definitely upgrading… I have the iPhone 4 now but every time they come out with a new release AT&T does a deal where you can upgrade only a year into your plan. So the past two times I’ve jailbroken my phone and put it up on eBay and sold it for around $200, which is the price of a new iPhone with a new contract. So every time I upgrade it’s essentially free… Yes… I’m upgrading to the iPhone 4s/5.

Yes good old eBay or even Craigslist rocks to be honest. Has made me more money than I would have thought.

I’m sticking with the iPhone 4 for awhile. I’m more interested in what iOS 5 will have.

So if not a faster phone, what more would you want out of an iPhone? I know iOS5 but better screen? Different design etc?

I think all of those are pluses, but as a buying factor, I’m more than happy to stick it out with iPhone 4 provided we get iOS 5, and provided iOS 5 is awesome (both of which I believe are high probabilities).

It would take a major overhaul (similar to the upgrade of 3GS to 4) that would lend me to consider upgrading, but I don’t believe this year’s update will be.

Hardware-wise, I think we’ll see it thinner, A5 processor, better camera(s), longer battery life, antenna adjustment, GSM & CDMA both on the same phone, No LTE. Maybe Thunderbolt support, doubtful significant redesign.

Software-wise – iOS 5, updated Mobile Me services (most likely in June), both of which should be available for the iPhone 4.

This is just my opinion of what I’ve read and seen. I could be wrong, but based on my assumptions, I don’t think the updated hardware would prompt me to upgrade early.

All likely and great stuff brother. I always wonder what is going through others heads before they upgrade to a new device of any kind.

          Thanks Brett!

The only thing about the updated MobileMe and even the iCloud rumors that I’m in doubt about is the rampant data-capping that both AT&T and Verizon are doing. I’m currently on a 200mb plan, and I don’t see how even a 2gb plan would last long with the intense music streaming/data syncing program that Apple is supposedly going to unleash.

SOOOOO thanks full I still have my unlimited data plan on that front.

I bet. So sad that I couldn’t get in on that gravy train, but I’ll be honest, I don’t seem them keeping those plans for long.

AT&T is already starting to data cap home internet plans, so it’s only a matter of time before they “phase” out the unlimited plans, maybe moving you down to 5gb, the point at which they supposedly cut your bandwidth in half as it is now.

I honestly doubt they could take away a grandfather in clause. I had a 39.99 plan on Verizon for 4 years after they stopped allowing it.

If ATT moves me off of it, I would probably get a different carrier involved.

            Wi-Fi?

I guess, since I’ve never had unlimited data (well, ok, I did with my 2G), it’s just never occurred to me to use data-intensive apps away from wi-fi (which seems omnipresent, even on the road).

I’m pretty hardcore, and the 2GB is fine for me. But, I come from an era when humans had to “think” about data usage – like it’s a scarce resource. It does seem we may be going back to that era with all the caps and whatnot from telcos.

Yeah, that’s my feeling. These devices, at a certain point, are just a wee slab for awesome software. As long as the ‘slab’ works, it’s a good experience.

The speed is good (dual-core will be nice, but not earth-shattering).

I just got my iPhone 4 in November. It does all that I need, so I don’t plan to upgrade. In December, my wife got an iPhone 3GS because it was on sale and because she had made the mistake of buying a crappy texting phone and needed a new one. She might get the upgrade, if it is true that iOS 5 will relegate the iPhone 3GS to the same nebulous techno-graveyard that the 3G currently exists in.

I do like the fact that Apple may be moving their iPhone release cycle to the fall. My upgrade will pop up in–guessing–August or September of 2012, which might be just in time to be an early adopter of the iPhone 5(?).

It amazes me that all of you people have such self control!!!

I so need things when they first come out – it’s something I am working on!

I just got my CDMA iPhone 4 2 weeks ago today and couldn’t be happier right now. It was time for my dad’s upgrade and he’s happy with his crackberry tour (doesn’t do much with his phone) so I used his upgrade. My upgrade is in September but I’m probably going to wait until next year when an LTE iPhone is released. I’m just glad I got my iPhone before Verizon starts data capping.

Glad to hear it, the 4 was a large leap forward and I honestly miss mine. The new one will be mine sooner or later!

I think YES to the new iPhone for me. I’m at the 3GS now and no OS5 could be the beginning of losing value on our 3GS… It has served me really well – so I am thinking about the upgrade and also going with the iPad2 for some music programs, PDF and a virtual office: PAPERLESS… That’s my new goal for 2012: Paperless office…

I’m definitely looking forward to getting the new 4S/5 but it will not be with Verizon. I made the AT&T to Verizon thinking that it would be a much better experience….boy was I wrong!!!

I’m still waiting to see what features iOS 5 has. I would really like the native calendar app to sync Google shared calendar colors. That’s weirdly a big thing for me. I would also like true threaded emails (like in Android) as well as the ability to label emails like the Gmail app in Android. Basically… I really just want the Android Gmail and Calendar app. Other than that I want an iPhone.
