One of the biggest technology debates going on this year is the discussion on if Apple or Android is better. The conversation is not new by any means, but with the poliferation of Android phones that have flooded the market, the latest phones that rival the iPhone in tech specs, the Apple iOS becoming very limiting, and the Google Play store catching up to the App Store, the decision has never been more difficult to answer. Below is a thorough discussion on my rationale up to this point without a decision one way or another.
The Runners Up
I simply will not be considering a Windows phone or Blackberry this year. Here is why.
- Blackberry Is Dead
There is no other way to put it. There are even rumors out there (though I do not believe them) that Blackberry may just adopt Android for their Google Play store. They are losing their biggest client, governments, and simply cannot keep up with innovation from Samsung. Blackberry is just not an option. - Windows Is Too Big Of A Headache
I feel like Windows is currently at where Android was a year or two ago. There was some buzz about the phone, but it had not been widely adopted. I can see them being a big success and it looks like they are willing to back their product with their cash, but I do not want to wait.
It’s More Than Just Apple’s iPhone
It is not just about the iPhone, otherwise this would be an easy decision.
- It’s A Whole Ecosystem
I currently own an iPhone, Apple TV, and MacBook Pro. Even more so, my wife, my parents, and my wife’s parents all own something Apple that is mobile. To leave it would require that we give up this exosystem that organically grew between all of us. - Apple Has Plateau
The first four iterations of Apple were innovative and groundbreaking within its hardware. But the hardware jump between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 just does not seem worth it. Even worse, it seems that the only significant hardware change for the possible 5S is a better camera and I could not care less about that. - I Am Not Upgrading to the 5S
If my decision is to stay within Apple, I do not plan to upgrade my phone because the cost of doing so seems silly for what I would get. Thus, the benefit for me is not having to pay for an upgrade.
Android Looks Like The New Dog
Android is looking pretty nice, but is it worth it?
- All My Main Apps Are Google.
If I am honest, I’m a closet Android fan. Or at least I am completely sold on how Google does software. The majority of my iOS use is in Gmail and Chrome. Otherwise, I am using social media, a calendar via Google Calendar online, and games. So software wise, I’m not tied down. - Google Now Looks Amazing
There is nothing else like Google Now out on the streets. It has predictive searching, integrative with all of your online web apps, and perfect for someone on the go. I have been drooling over getting to use it. - Android Hardware Looks Great
I think I would love to have any of the three top Android devices. Whether I get the cost-effective Moto X, the high-end HTC One, or the stock Google Nexus 4, I think I would be happy with my choice.
So what is your preference and do you have any suggestions for someone that is in with Apple but considering going Android?

Now what about Windows Phone? Gotta give some equal time.

As I said in the video and post, Windows is too much of a headache right now. In 2-3 years, they will probably be a ROCKSTAR because of the money they are pouring into it, but they are unfortunately still 3 years behind because they waited so long to get into the mobile business effectively. Even worse, they do not have a fully functioning API with their apps (hence the whole YouTube app issues right now)
Roberto Torres says
I am not so sure it’s Microsoft’s API, http://www.zdnet.com/theres-nothing-wrong-with-google-blocking-microsofts-youtube-app-7000019507/. And I can’t go any further without sounding like a fan boy.

I think it is too late to not sound like a fan boy. 🙂 I think that Microsoft is on its way with their phone, but not there yet. I am actually excited about the next iteration, but it cannot be on the camera…
YouTube and Google need to keep expanding, but Microsoft has shown numerous times that it is willing to go rogue… I trust that YouTube is still willing to let them if they do it right.

As much as Ubuntu excites me, it is open source and untested. I love being on the cutting edge but I do not like being a test subject… I do not want to invest in a phone with a 2 year contract and get burned.
Are you going to do Ubuntu?
Michael John Beil says
No. I’m sticking with Apple. It was just a thought.

Interesting article. Thanks for the write-up. Btw, typo above: Exosystem should be ecosystem I think.

Good catch. Got it.

I use Macbook for working, but as someone who is always on the go, my focus is Android. Between my GS4 and Nexus 7, I get it all done. They play nice with both of my laptops (I keep a Windows machine at home), the cloud works without issues, and I get a lot of elbow room to play around with the system and its usability.

You make me jealous and today the Nexus 4 is sold out so if I want to go stock Android, I have to wait for Nexus 5 or go for the Moto X.
