This is the nineteenth article in the series App of the Week series.
If you are a mobile person in any sense and have a desire to create great photos for any number of reasons (your blog, social media, Snapchat, ministry, business), then you need to have a great iOS app that will not only have great features, but not limit you in what you can do or disrupt a great product with watermarks. The Over app is one app that is perfect for anyone that is remotely interested in taking their photos to the next level. This is our review of the app.
The Good
Over is maybe the strongest non-social media linked photo app out there right now. Here is what is amazing about it.
- Great Selection One of the worst parts about many photo applications is that they may have some quality filters to take a terrible photo and make it look okay, the text overlay and cropping leave so much to be desired. Over has successfully accomplished this.
- Customize It While the number of fonts is great, you can actually install more and even sell great decals to put on your photos for those that need some more variance.
- Inspirational As great as Over is, their inspirational photos that are already on their site may actually be the best part of the app because it encourages you to get creative with your app.
The Bad
While I love the service, I have a couple of grips about it.
- Nothing Revolutionary The most revolutionary thing about this app is that they do everything well, but to stand out they need more. Right now, they are still stuck in the pack of iOS photo apps.
- No Font Effects It may be unfair, but I compare all iOS apps to Photoshop, the photo editing standard. So simple things like drop shadows for text on a photo that has a high white balance is desperately needed.
- Double Charges and Crashes I have not had this happen, but I was hesitant to even spend the $.99 to get this app because of the number of reviews that state you may get charged double for in-app purchased and the frequency of crashed. This is second hand info as I have not experienced it, but leaves a bad taste in many users mind.
What do you like or hate about Over on iOS?
Chip Dizard says
I enjoy Over, but I think it’s just the “cool” factor of it. There is nothing revolutionary about it, and you are correct. I haven’t had any issues with it, but in the crowded world of apps it does what it claims—puts cool text effects over your photos.

It might very well be, but I am okay with relying on cool for a while. All the other options are not fun.
