This is the nineteenth article in the series App of the Week series.
For many years, Google has been developing many different ways to communicate with people, including Google Hangout,a competitor to GMail in Waves, Google Talk, and others. Since the inception and release of Google+, Google has pushed to unify many parts of its company or completely end them and the long overdue combining of all of Google’s messenger web apps. What was once considered a bit of a joke for a large company to not have a masterful messenger client is now the envy of many other companies. Here is our review of the iOS app.
The Good
Finally, after much anticipation, Google has unified their messaging services and ensured that mobile was part of that process in Google Hangout.
- Complete Google Communication This may be the biggest fix that Google could have made in the last two months. No Google communication was unified and so the system can effectively be used now.
- Google+ Hangouts Work Great There are currently minimal limits on Google+ Hangouts with such features as the Hangout Toolbox and VPN Screen Control not implemented, but probably not needed.
- All The Options Google could have limited what was available and not on this app, but they didn’t and so this makes it a better app than Facebook Messanger in my opinion.
The Bad
This app is so needed, but it did not yet hit a bullseye. Here are some changes that are needed.
- Notifications Slow I’ve had the desktop and iOS app running
- Unwarranted Notifications When you do a hangout on Google+ on your desktop, you receive a notification for it on the iOS app. Not sure why and confusing at times.
- Cannot Set Status It’s weird that a simple feature like setting your current status to available or busy is not possible on the phone. This needs to be added.
