This is the twenty-third article in the series App of the Week series.
Basecamp is the perfect online collaboration tool for any and all of your projects when you have more than four people on your project. Check out our review on Monday of several different web apps and why Basecamp should be an option. While the web app is great, what about the iOS app that goes with it? Here is our review of it.
The Good
The entire Basecamp collaboration tool is great and this mobile application is a wonderful addition to the web app.
- Progress Timeline This is perfect for those adding to the project or managing it as you go through the timeline of changes, comments, and additions/removals from the project. Also great for when you add people to the project so that they can get caught up.
- Perfect Project Monitor Whether you are at coffee with a client, talking informally with your supervisor, or needing to find out some details on the run, you have access to all of this on the phone.
- Next 6 Weeks For those that utilize the calendar well, the “next 6 weeks” is perfect to see a quick overview of all of the events coming up across all of the projects within the organization.
The Bad
I love the whole Basecamp web app as a collaboration tool, but the iOS app is missing a lot.
- Not Great for Long-Hand When writing your content on the Basecamp web app, it is great for leaving the short comments or uploading photos or files that you have on your mobile phone, but it is not the device to write a whole narrative on it.
- No Calendar Edits For someone always on the go, a calendar edit would be perfect for quick calendar notes that can be filled in later. No such luck right now.
- Better Discussion Formatting Currently, the discussion format is to show the latest interaction on an informal timeline. If I want to sort the discussions by initial post without all of the comments on the screen, I cannot and have to search for quite a few minutes on active projects for the original posts. Needs better organization.
