As a bi- (tri-? quad-?!) vocational ministry leader, it’s crucial to keep a close eye on my schedule. As I juggle work, classes, family, blogging, and leading, it’s easy to lose the important details. Calendar apps are a dime a dozen, but good calendar apps are a rarity. Google’s stock calendar app is good, but is there something better out there on the Play Store? Let’s see. Introducing: Today.
The Calendar App I Always Wanted
The calendar apps I used to use were either hideous or featureless. Today combines the perfect amount of function with perfect design layouts to create my favorite calendar app to date. Let’s see what I like about it:
- The Layout- Why don’t all calendar apps have the month and agenda all on one screen? I mean really. Come on! My favorite layout is the month/agenda option because I can get a glimpse at what days I’ve got free as well as tap on the individual days to see exactly what’s going on. Perfect!
- The Widgets- Today’s resizable, customizable widgets will beautify any screen you add them to. I’ve actually dedicated a full page to the ageda widget fully expanded. Everything scrolls silky smooth and nothing crashes. A perfect accompaniment to an already outstanding app.
- The Developer- +Jack Underwood has always been on my radar as a quality developer. He’s responsive, reasonable, and relevant. He’s squashed every bug I’ve reported very promptly and I couldn’t be happier with the support of this app.
- The Icon- Yes. The icon. I mention it because it pioneered a mini revolution in the android calendar icon realm. Jack was the first to discover how to implement the icon changing with the day! iOS does this, and now Android can too. Take that! He even worked with Nova Launcher’s developer to allow this feature to work with custom icon packs too! Many of the top tier icon themers have implemented this feature into their packs already, and more and more hop aboard each day.
Are There Any Cons?
I’m not convinced there are too many. It’s stable, gorgeous, and regularly updated. I see a possible negative being the minimalistic way the calendar marks a day with events in the month/agenda mode. The small lines indicating the event could be hard to discern for the faint of eye.
The next point I’d like to mention is more of a tip than an actual con. Since this is a calendar app, it will notify you of the appointments you already have set up on your stock calendar. Be sure you disable notifications for your stock calendar, or you’ll be spammed with notifications! I always seem to forget this when I install a new calendar app, so I figured I’d be nice and give you a heads up!
On a final note, I feel it appropriate to link you guys back to our Remember When It Was Fun? article since we’re talking about calendars and schedules. Remember not to fill up your time so full of ministry that you neglect your family, true community, and other responsibilities you may have!
What calendar app do you use? What do you like about it? What do you think could be done better?
