There’s been an odd competition between Amazon and Apple.
They haven’t actually competed head-to-head, yet, but everyone could see Amazon starting down a road that would eventually lead to some heated competition.
Amazon has been heaping-on loads of dedicated Kindle users and is about ready to dip into the tablet marketplace this year.
It’s said they are prepping two color tablet models:
7.1-inch Coyote
- Dual-Core NVIDA Tegra2 Processor
- Cost: Under $250
10.1-inch Hollywood
- NVIDIA Tegra3 Quadcore
- Glass-on-Glass Dual Screen Technology
- Google Android 3.1 OS
- Back-lit Color / E-reading Mode Switch
- Cost: Under $400
Will it compete?

I like the idea of an eink/lcd switch. But one of the big reasons I don’t like reading on the ipad is that it is too heavy. So unless that 10 in screen is really light, I will stick with my current 8 ounce kindle 3.
Eric Dye says
Good point, Adam. Weight is a … uh … huge? … factor.
Brian Alexander says
Interesting how late in the game they bring this into fruition.
Adam Shields says
It will all be about the reality. I have tried a couple of android tablets and none of them compare to my ipad. I have tried several ereaders and none of them compare to my kindle. I think right now we are still at two dominent players that have different skill sets. My guess is that the their first version of a tablet will suck. But Amazon is pretty committed to the android system now so they may end up with a fairly good product in a generation or two. The kindle updates have been fairly minor, but the third generation is much better than the first.

amen adam! couldn’t have said it better myself.
Eric Dye says
True, true.

You can’t be a game changer unless you come onto the field after the game has started 😉

We’ve seen market demand for “enhanced” e-books, and the new Kindle should do well. I love my iPad, but Adam brings up some good points above
Doug Gilmer says
I have been slow to jump on the tablet bandwagon but that is because my Nook Color e-reader does a pretty good job of keeping me productive on the go. It doesn’t have 3G but it does have wi-fi and runs on the Android platform. The apps allow me to type notes, maintain a schedule, surf the web, receive and reply to email, listen to musoc, watch video, and keep up with all my social media functions and contacts. Its not a replacement for a laptop but it does allow me to travel lighter unless I have to do some power work while I’m away. For $249 its a great bargain. And I almost forgot, I can read books on it too! Amazon was smart by building a huge Kindle following and no doubt many will jump to their new tablet as well.
Eric Dye says
Low price point (compared to the iPad), huge following, easy money.
Tre Lawrence says
Bingo… price point plus potential expandability (root, maybe?) may make it popular.
Eric Dye says
😉
Eric J says
I don’t think it will be 3.1 as it won’t be open sourced, and google wouldn’t let amazon be a partner with a competing appstore .
Eric Dye says
Good point.
