Amazon Android App Store Has Now Dropped!

March 23, 2011
by James Brooks

Good news for those of you with an Android handset in the US – The Amazon Android App Store has dropped!

They are even giving apps away free right now!

I wondered how Amazon were actually going to run their app store – but having taken a look the way it works is that when you purchase the app online, Amazon will then either email or text you a link to a download so that you can install the app on your device.

Having a bit of competition in the mix is very exciting times.

What do you make of this? Have you tried the Amazon Android App Store out yet?

I tried it yesterday and installed the new Angry Birds app. These apps require the Amazon Appstore app to be installed, which is an interesting twist.

The installation of the app wasn’t any more complicated than the Amazon MP3 downloader install.

They’re giving away a free (normally paid) app every day.

I guess I’ll be pragmatic about it — like I do with MP3s right now. If an app is cheaper through Amazon, then, I’ll go that route. Otherwise, I’ll stick to the native Android Marketplace.

Wonder if the Kindle will go Android someday. That’d be interesting.
