The Awakening Band is the worship ministry of New Life Worship Center. It leads worship for its youth ministry, “Awakening Youth” each week, its Awakening Twenty Plus ministry and for its annual Awakening Conference.
“Adonai” is the ministry’s second release recorded live at their last year’s Awakening Conference in Rhode Island.
According to their music director, Joshua Foster,”We want this album to be a true expression of the passion and excitement that was there on those nights. Adonai, meaning, ‘My Lord, My Master’ and ‘God’s total possession; my total submission.’ It is our hope that, through this album, your life and church will experience the tangible presence of God. It’s the sound of what God is doing in our church and our region, and we pray you feel that in the heart of every track.”
About the Songs
This project contains 10 songs, 4 of which also feature Aaron Gillespie:
- Make You Known
- Ain’t No Grave
- Scandal of Grace
- No Other Name
- Just As I Am
- Jesus Paid It All
- Amazing Because It Is
The ministry’s sound is similar to other rock/pop contemporary worship bands out there. “Alive”, “Make You Known”, open the album with up-tempo music. Then follows a mid-tempo blues-rock chorus “Ain’t no grave” (yes, by Johnny Cash)—frankly, not really sure of the purpose of including this one—seemed out of place to me.
Things vastly improve with a very good cover of Hillsong’s “Scandal of Grace”. The next track “No Other Name” is one of the better songs here running on the theme of remembering the Cross and worshiping Jesus for it. Then, there’s a fresh take of the classic hymn “Just as I am” including a new chorus and bridge. Another cover, this time, a moving rendition of “Jesus Paid it All” (Kristian Stanfill’s version) follows.
“Amazing, Because it is” is a new version of “Amazing Grace” set to a fresh melody. “Forever” is another cover of Kari Jobe’s song—probably the best cover in this album, sung and led really well—Kari would be proud of this one!
The project closes with the title track, “Adonai”—and it’s the best song of the record with great lyrics and a catchy “Hallelujah, Holy” chorus. It’s a cool anthem to proclaim our hope that Christ will return to us one day.

“Adonai”, “Forever” and “Jesus Paid it All” and maybe “No Other Name” are all songs that would work well in congregational worship sessons.
