We all want that extra punch to our kick drum don’t we? How many times do we walk away from a concert or even another church thinking,
‘I wish our drums sounded like that?’
I know I’m constantly critiquing and tinkering with our sound system to know end. Everything from adding an 18 inch subwoofer, crossover, and in-ear monitors.
And if I’ve come to learn one thing it’s simply this: A good drummer with a great drum mix can take your your worship band to a whole new level!
But if you’re on a budget and don’t have all the right gear, high end acoustics, or even the right sound person mixing it all together, might I suggest an easy $40 dollar fix?!
Enter the KickPort.
The KickPort is a kick drum insert that adds attack, more low ends hertz, as well as added feel for the drummer. It’s made of hard plastic with a rubber flange on the outside to hold it in place and literally took me 5 minutes to install.
The whole concept is to direct more of the sound and energy through a more specific port, thus increasing the overall sound and attack. And it does this with or without the use of mics.

I’ve recently added it to our mix and I am more than pleased. So if you want to add a bit more punch and attack without doing any major overhaul, be sure to check out the KickPort!

Have you used the KickPort? If so, what are your impressions?
What’s your best advice to adding that low end punch to the mix?

Great tip! I’ve actually recorded a kick that had one of these before and you’re right, it definitely does give them a lot more punch.

You can’t beat it for $40. It gives a better feel for drummers too.

For sure! Might have to pick one up for myself and install it on any kick drum I’m working with in the future.
