We’ve recently fitted all the 8BIT blogs with a persistent set of social sharing options to the left of the content blocks.
We had polled the community previously here about their thoughts and after doing some basic A/B testing and successful results from our WordPress Theme (that uses it natively) we’ve decided to implement it:
We’re also using the Add This service to grab all the other possibilities out there:

With regard to the Facebook option, why the Share badge and not the Like button? Just curious.
Brett Barner says
I guess I’m more curious why they went with the small FB share button instead of the full counter…
John Saddington says
if you click the share it expands to the full counter.
Brett Barner says
Sure, but why not default as the full counter when set at zero?
John Saddington says
definitely could. the standard theme does that right out of the box.
John Saddington says
there was an issue with our cdn and minifying .js files… it put the counter in weird places. that was one issue.
Brett Barner says
Actually a better worded question is why use this FB share button over the one that comes defaulted with the Standard theme? Is there a benefit one over the other?
John Saddington says
just playing around with a different one. we customized ours in standard theme a lot more
brett barner says
Got ya. I like the changes by the way
John Saddington says
that’s easy. share button gives you customization of message and thumbnail representation. it’s better for giving contextual sharing and more prominent in ppl’s streams. the like button is faster.. but more minimal impact in the stream.
Andrew says
Actually, the Like button allows you to customize the message and thumbnail too. You just have to toy around with meta tags.

It’s only more prominent in a stream if the person using the Like button chooses not to leave a comment (though, in fairness, that’s most of the time).
John Saddington says
i like giving some context.
