ICANN has announced that they will now let pornography have it’s own top-level domain, dot-XXX, and I’m sure there are tons of people already reserving the coveted URLs.
This doesn’t surprise me nor does it make me nervous or anxious about pornography on the web – those that are interested in creating this type of content and profiting from it have been doing so for a long time and the dot-XXX domain structure won’t change this.
Let’s continue to pray for those that are affected by it and those that need to continue their healing process as they escape from it.

What if we went and started buying up all of them to use for non-porn sites? Effective or a waste of time and resources?
Greg Hudy says
The upside to this is that it will be easier to block those site because they will have the .xxx extension.
Steven Rossi says
I’m curious if more of these will be sold for non-porn sites. Who doesn’t want their domain to end in .xxx? churchcrunch.xxx? That’s brilliant!
Anyway, I’m not sure this will serve the purpose they’re implying (that is, moving this sort of content into a dedicated space on the web so that only those who want to access it will have access to it). What site is going to get rid of their .com domain? I don’t know, I see it as more of a secondhand type of thing, perhaps even as a novelty for people who want to spend some money on something extra.

Now if they would only require them all to move to the .xxx domains it would be so much easier to filter out all the junk on the web.

The Democrat in me:
“Let’s make all porn content have to move to that domain. Make the registration free of charge to encourage it but set a timeline that all websites meeting certain criteria have to end their site in .xxx. By doing so we can easily filter the web by blocking a top level domain instead of relying on third party systems to constantly update with new websites and information.”
The Libertarian in me:
“Forcing sites with specific content to give up a .com sets a dangerous precedent. It’s also a regulation nightmare trying to define exactly what qualifies (does Victoria Secret have to go there, or are they ok?). In the end regulation begins in the home, not the government. The .xxx domain is there as an option, but shouldn’t be a forced thing.”
The Republican in me:
Just kidding, there is no Republican in me.

.xxx domain extension will give these site more poularity… I am sure most porn vendors will find this to be a useful approach by the ICANN…

maybe that should be mandatory. That way a blanket blocking of porn sites would easier
