Since Twitter first launched in July 2006, social media has changed from simply posting pictures and poking friends, to sharing completely useless and extremely important information via tweets, and direct messages. Many of the tweets started out as ‘what I had for lunch’ and it became the butt of many jokes. But the users of Twitter have matured into a viable marketing tool. So here are 3 ways people use Twitter.
Find Out Details About Breaking News
CNN and USAToday are great news sources, but breaking news for them has to go through upper management, get approved both the correct people, and the story written before we as ‘the people’ even hear what is going on. Twitter is an unfiltered news source that can immediately express what is going on in the world. Things like details of what was happening in Iran, who got booted off American Idol, or the tsunami of Japan, all were present on Twitter before any big news corporations. Within seconds you’ll have all the information you need, even if it isn’t up yet anywhere else on the internet.
Find a Job
For those that are freelancers or unemployed, this is a free and immediate resource to get your application and work out there. Tim Schmoyer is taking advantage of this with a social media freelance tweet. Other routes are to follow people like @TweetMyJOBS, which lets you pick the field you’re interested in and get real-time Twitter updates of job listings you might be interested in or you could simply search the hashtag #jobs and a specifier of what job you want. (Example: jobs for webdesign)
Find Out If A Website Is Down
I have tried to get on Facebook or my Gmail, only to find that the website was not working. Then I would go to Twitter and search the keyword and find that just as many people are suffering from social media or email withdraw. Up-to-date and fairly accurate information.

Writers also like to use twitter not only as a creative space, but as an area to perfect their trade. In the writing world, you can have the long version tomorrow, but the short version takes more time. When trying to successfully communicate the same information, writing within only 140 characters can allow writers and bloggers to work on making better use of their words as a habit.

I love this concept. It is also a great preview for them before getting the finished product out to the public. A perfect use!
