How can Churches help close the Homework Gap?
We have talked about the Homework Gap here and here on ChurchMag, and as someone who has experienced both bad and good internet connections, I know that I’m privileged to have even had an internet connection in the first place.
5 million families with school aged children do not have access to high speed internet at home.
Below I have three ways that churches can begin to help close the Homework Gap.
Have Your Church Take This Survey
This one is really simple and easy, and even if you can’t get your whole church to take it, even just you taking it can help. This Survey by Speak Up Research Project is a national initiative of Project Tomorrow, and in their own words:
Speak Up is the research tool districts use to learn what students, educators, parents and the community have to say about education issues.
The Speak Up Research Project for Digital Learning, a national initiative of Project Tomorrow, is both a national research project and a free service to schools and districts everywhere.
Your church has a voice even in this, and this is one way it can be heard.
Making Your Church A Wi-Fi Hotspot
Recently, I noticed how deserted churches look during the week; empty parking lots, locked doors, and absolutely no life in or around them until Sunday mornings, maybe Sunday evenings. What if churches were open during the week as WiFi hotspots for people in the community to come and use for homework and work?
Things you would need to be able to do this:
- A church with an internet connection;
- Members of the church who are ready to volunteer time to opening the church for this purpose;
- A consistent and set schedule of when it can be open.
In this way, your church can be a safe, open, reliable place for young people to do their homework.
Your Church Can Give
Giving to the 1Million Project Foundation is another way your church can help close the Homework Gap. By donating you’re doing even more than just close the gap because:
By positioning students to more ably complete their homework in a safe, quiet environment, you’re helping them to achieve better grades and greater successes in nearly every aspect of their lives.
This is just another way for your church to show they care, love, and want to invest in the younger generation.
