Church Communicators Interview Series: Brady Shearer

August 17, 2016
by Meghan Howard

In the world of digital and social media church communication there are many individuals doing some great work and paving a path forward that the church has not been yet. Some of these individuals you may have had interactions with or have even seen a product of their work. Others might have slipped through the radar as they continue to work in the trenches of church communications. I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight them. Here is a small window into their world.

Brady Shearer is the founder of Pro Church Tools that seeks to help those in ministry “navigate the tricky world of digital media.” Brady lives in Niagara Falls, ON with his wife and daughter. If you don’t follow Brady on Snapchat it is a must. He not only provides weekly digital media tips, but he can tell some of the best stories around all while using Snapchat.

Here is my interview with Brady.

Innovation or Profitability: Which Should Determine The Future of Church Technology?

Innovation or Profitability: Which Should Determine The Future of Church Technology?

August 17, 2016
by Emily Forman

Quietly powering many churches in America, Church Management Systems (ChMS) impose opportunities and limitations. Recent acquisitions and mergers between the largest industry players have led to an increasingly closed environment. As for-profit organizations, they are locking into profitable and even exclusive agreements with debit/credit card processing partners in the pursuit for increased revenues. This all comes with a price tag of higher costs and lower innovation. At the mercy of the quickly consolidating world of deep-pocket vendors and for-profit secular companies, churches are drowning under the industry’s bottom line. Church Theme Content Plugin: Powering Church Websites

Church Theme Content Plugin: Powering Church Websites

One of the biggest difficulties for church’s to overcome when building a website is gathering content. The second flows right out of it: how to present and organize that content. So many websites die on the first count that it’s hard to criticize the survivors on the second.

Hard. Not impossible.

Some of these websites look like books printed out of order, and what’s so infuriating is that they don’t have to, especially if they’re WordPress sites.

Does Emoji Equality Make A Difference?

Does Emoji Equality Matter?

August 16, 2016
by Jeremy Smith

At the beginning of the year, I made a goal that I wanted to talk more about the gender inequality in the tech world and begin to have a discussion if this is also present within the church tech world.

Well, this conversation has taken a unique turn as Google, who is one of the many tech companies who are discussing gender inequality, is now trying to push gender equality with emojis.

As Google points out in the blog article, we use emojis a lot. We even now have a Bible translation with emojis. It would make sense we need to have women in professions on the list to chose from. Unfortunately, the list is sadly still 1900s-ish.

We’re beyond making a case for churches having a blog. Every church should blog. It is a critical tool for discipleship, leadership, and pastoral care, among other things. The question is no longer, “Should we have a blog?” but, “How do we sustain content creation?” Ideas for sustainable content creation for your church blog become critical.

Don’t feel bad about struggling to create content. The challenge of creating content has plagued bloggers since blogging first started. Just don’t allow failure, frustration have the last word. Snapchat and the Church

SnapChat and the Church

A few years back I wrote the official Snapchat Guidelines for Churches.

I take it all back. Every word of it.

Here’s the thing. Snapchat changed the social game, but it didn’t at the same time.

Social media is all about being social. Always has been.
