White Noise App Review: SimplyNoise

January 6, 2014
by Phil Schneider

SimplyNoise is exactly what it says: it’s simply noise—white, pink, or brown.

Now, a few years ago, I would have wondered, “Why would anyone want noise?” But now that I’m older, wiser, and desperate for a quite place, I’m aware of the power that white noise can offer.

Many people find that noise, as opposed to music or spoken word, helps them to focus and drown out external noises and distractions. I’m not a huge fan of using noise to create a “cocoon of sound,” but I can see how it might help some people.

Feedback: A Primer

January 6, 2014
by Tim Adams

You know the sound, a low hum that turns into a rumble that turns into a roar or a voice that sounds like it’s in a tin can and then the all-too-familiar high-pitched squeal that kills your hearing; that’s right, I’m talking about feedback.

It’s the bane of every board operator in every church, in every venue, at every event and it’s been prime enemy number one since live sound first came about.  The basic premise is that the microphone is picking up the sound from a monitor or the house speakers and this creates a feedback loop.  It’s the acoustical equivalent of standing in between two mirrors and seeing yourself replicated into infinity.  It’s not a good problem to have and there are two primary ways of combating it.

The hope is that you end up feeling like Tony Stark and what you have created cannot be hidden, instead of giving some boring prewritten speech, instead giving the presentation that you know needs to be shared.

January 6, 2014
by Jeremy Smith

Churches are finally getting online and the web is moving on without them. Having a good website for people to see on their computer is not enough anymore. Now we need to make sure visuals are high quality, websites are mobile responsive, and we are taking great photos of staff, volunteers, congregation members, and ministry events and then posting them on social networks on Pinterest and Instagram.

Here are three visual stats that you need to consider for your online presence:

by Anne Dye

These work in progress bars designed by Swedish graphic designer, Viktor Hertz, are super clever.

Progress bars popping up are always everybody’s favorite, right?

I would bet they would be if they were all this randomly awesome. [Read more…] about Work In Progress Bars by Viktor Hertz

The Christian Social Media Manager Prayer

January 5, 2014
by KC Procter

As Christians we represent Jesus to the world. We don’t always do a good job. Often we do a terrible job. That’s not to say we can’t do better. We can. Thankfully God’s grace is sufficient.

Those involved in church social media have a responsibility to represent Jesus, the Church, and their local church online. I’d like suggest a prayer as a reminder of who we are and the role we play for Kingdom purposes.
