Church architecture is very interesting. While there are many Churches that have lasted the ages and are pieces of art in their own right, many modern Churches are very simple.
There is a huge variety – from converted 7-11’s to the Duomo – but it’s what goes on in the inside that really matters.
Here are a dozen amazing Church buildings from around the world!
Cathedral of Saint Basil the Blessed (Moscow, Russia)
Many of you have seen this in 8-bit (Tetris), this is the famed chapel that stands at the very heart of Moscow, in the Red Square.
Duomo, Milan Cathedral (Milan, Italy)
My wife and oldest daughter saw it a few months ago while at the hospital in Milano. It. Is. Amazing.
The Church of HallgrÃmur (ReykjavÃk, Iceland)
Reaching 244 feet high, it’s the fourth tallest architectural structure in Iceland. Construction began in 1945 and ended in 1986, taking 38-years to complete!
The Felsenkirche a.k.a. Church of the Rock, (Idar-Oberstein, Germany)
This Church isn’t actually built into the mountain, but built into a natural niche in the rocks! Amazing.
The Chapelle Saint-Michel (Le Puy-en-Velay, France)
The Chapelle Saint-Michel is perched on a volcanic plug!
Church in a Hill (Luxembourg)
Built into the hillside, this automatically makes it awesome. Am I right?
Church of St. George(Lalibela, Ethiopia)
The Church of St. George is completely carved out of stone! An amazing feat!
Cadet Chapel (Air Force Academy, Colorado, USA)
The United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel, completed in 1962, is the distinguishing feature of the Cadet Area at the United States Air Force Academy. Originally controversial in its design, the Cadet Chapel has become a classic and highly regarded example of modernist architecture. The Cadet Chapel was awarded the American Institute of Architects’ National 25 Year Award in 1996, and as part of the Cadet Area, was named a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2004.
Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, (Cundinamarca, Colombia)
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira is an underground Church built in a tunnel of salt mines deep inside a salt mountain. Wow!
Las Lajas Cathedral (Colombia, South America)
Las Lajas Cathedral was built in 1916 inside the canyon of the Guaitara. Beautiful!
Thorncrown Chapel (Eureka Springs, AR, USA)
Thorncrown Chapel is just outside of Eureka Springs in the Arkansas Ozarks. Truly amazing.

Can anyone tell me who built this Church?
