Here are 10 questions you can ask your church social media followers to increase engagement rate among your congregation. Without engagement, you’re like a seed that fell on rocky places.
Do you know what an engagement rate is? No, I’m not talking about how fast all your friends got married in their 20’s (although it’s true). I’m talking about one of the most important metrics in social media. You can have 10,000 followers, but if none of your followers are engaging with your content, then the content is failing to do its job.
There are plenty of ways to capture people’s attention and you can definitely pay for ads to increase your reach, but the best (and free) way to get your content out there is to engage your audience. Ask and you shall receive (more likes).
Here are 10 different types of questions you can ask, followed by some real life questions you can ask right now (with some tweaking!):
1. Specific/Direct
What is your favorite book of the Bible? Why?
2. Yes or No/Survey
Do you think insert pastor’s name should get a hair cut?
Do you think it’s time we change out our carpet?
3. Timely/Current Events
Today is Good Friday. What are you thankful Christ has done in your life?
Happy Valentine’s Day! Who’s your sweetheart? Tag them in a comment below!
4. Photo
What’s a good caption for this photo?
5. Preference
Do you prefer Fall or Spring?
Do you like Christmas or Easter more?
6. Events
Who’s coming to church this Sunday?
Who’s excited about Movie on the Lawn this Friday?
7. Experience
What was your all-time favorite moment from our student orchestra performance last night?
What was the best mission journey you’ve ever been on?
8. Personal
How can we be praying for you today?
9. Educational
Did you know that we have over 300 volunteers helping to make every Sunday a success?
10. Ask for Tips
How can we serve you better as a church?
What can we do to make Fall Retreat better next year?
Conclusion
There are two key rules in asking questions on social media:
- Be precise
- Keep it simple
Questions should be short and simple so they can be easily read and answered immediately. Lengthy posts are ignored. Avoid asking two questions at the same time or multiple questions on the same topic. Also, try to not sound like a robot, but more like an old, caring friend.
Since you’re now a social media engagement question asking genius, I expect to see some questions you’re asking in the comments.

Thanks, Katie! This is a great starter list for asking really good questions that invite engagement. Do you find a pretty good response? I feel like it’s getting harder and harder to actually get people to do anything in the digital world… there’s just so much vying for attention.

I agree with you, but yes, I find that asking questions garners a better response then just statements or event postings. We want them to engage and feel like they’re a crucial part of our ministry. Do you have any questions you ask? We recently just used this statement and it got big results: “It’s Sunday night. Take a deep breath. And cast all your cares of the week to Jesus. He wants to take those from us.”
